Discussion 1

Most would agree that effective classroom management is a critical element for the successful teacher. However, issues that take place outside of the classroom walls often trickle into the schoolhouse. For instance, some students embrace cyberbullying to make themselves feel better. In your opinion, what collaborations could teachers and parents forge to better address this issue?

Just having open lines of communication between parents and schools can help with this matter. The communication can be from a teacher or if he/she is not comfortable with talking with the parent then administration can step in.  I know our administration does a lot of things when it comes to student wellness and what concerns or problems that are occurring is relayed to the teachers to help keep track of things at school. Other ways would be to have a bullying hotline or bullying website for parents and teachers to report issues or instances of bullying.  Our counselors are also on call 24/7 for crisis/ bullying or domestic issues as well.

Discussion 2

All classrooms are different. Each student has a preferred learning style, while teachers have their preferred modes of instructional techniques as well. Keeping this in mind, why would a teacher select student-centered strategies over teacher-centered approaches? Include any personal experiences that you may have had with either of these approaches.

Student centered strategies are a better way for students to learn. While it does give up some aspects that most teachers find comfortable, such as being in total control and having a seemingly orderly classroom, student centered strategies are better. Teacher led only focuses on one type of learning student lead focuses on many types of learning, it gives students autonomy and allows them the learn in their own style, not just the teachers style.  As a science teacher we use experimental design which allow the students to design and perform their own labs and experiments. This allows those that grasp the concepts to go above and beyond what the lab is supposed to teach, while giving others a change to grasp the actual objectives, whether that be designing their own lab or learning from the other in the group a grasping the objectives that way. Experimental design is also another way for the teacher to evaluate how well the students are grasping concepts. I enjoy student centered classroom, but it does take some adjusting on my part.
