Essay Topic:
Dark Tourism
Dark tourism – also known as thanatourism – comes in many forms, from visits to memorial sites such as the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, to the killing fields in Cambodia, to trips to the wreck of the Costa Concordia, or tours of slums in India and Brazil. War tourism, another form of dark tourism, and disaster tourism are probably the most controversial because they involve getting up close and personal with very recent or ongoing suffering such as visits to post-earthquake Tibet, or war torn Syria.Dark tourism brings a number of issues to the forefront, such as the ethics of voyeurism and exploitation of suffering.
Is ‘Dark tourism’ disrespectful to victims? Should it continue to be allowed? Why/why not?
