Compare and contrast they ways in which two of our three screen texts (How To Get Away With Murder, Fargo and Silence of The Lambs) present their female detective (lawyer/cop/special agent) figures and their subversion of and adherence to their prescribed place in the culture of their particular time and place.
Remember, the point of comparison and contrast is to draw some meaningful conclusion from the exercise, not simply to list similarities and differences. Your thesis will need to be specific, and not take on too much. Avoid the temptation to turn the comparison into an argument for which film or show is better but aim instead for an assessment of how gender is dealt with. For example, you might want to argue that one depicts womens struggle against patriarchal culture more than the other, or you might want to draw some conclusions about how antisocial behavior is positioned in relation to marriage and domesticity and how that shapes the two narratives. Or you may want to argue for the movies or shows as belonging to slightly different genres or tonal registers and suggest how that changes the way gender is addressed. Or you may want to suggest that one film or show more clearly exemplifies certain arguments as set out in the readings we have done. Start by identifying just a couple of key scenes and ideas.
