Twitter and Communication
Social media has been around for years, connecting everyone together. It has contributed so much to our society, creating friendships, raising awareness, and making life easier. Twitter in particular is a great resource for personal branding, allowing virtually anyone to share opinions and content efficiently across the globe. Twitter proves to be a wonderful source for family and friends, and individuals in general to stay connected from all around the world. Globalization has been, and most likely will always be, an ongoing process that eliminates borders between nations and allows connection between nations. For example, 20 years ago it would have been difficult to keep in touch with someone from across the nation. Now it’s as easy with just a click of a button. Thanks to the evolvement of Twitter, millions of people are familiar with it and can be able to easily access this site for reliance. Twitter is accessible worldwide, the fastest social platform for international news, and a wonderful source for keeping people aware of important matters.
According to recent social media industry figures, Twitter currently ranks as one of the leading social networks worldwide based on active users. As of the fourth quarter of 2015, Twitter had 305 million monthly active users. Some analysts argue this shows Twitter has a bigger audience than active users indicate. An online survey found that 36 percent of respondents said they had visited Twitter’s website or services, and more than the 22 percent who said they were active users. This indicates that individuals who do not have Twitter accounts still access the website for information and for their own benefit. Twitter is used by people of all ages, religions, cultures, and nationalities. Businesses and international corporations use Twitter for their own advantage, as well.
In addition, Twitter is the fastest social platform that provides instant international news and crises. The world’s very best content is already inside of Twitter. All of the news, sports, entertainment, human interest, music, branding, social justice, humor, politics, celebrities, technology, and beyond. Twitter not only has it all, but it has it instantly as well, before any other platform in the world. With the provision of information before it airs on television, it is no surprise individuals rely on it more. People use Twitter as a way to connect with their local community as well. For example, a mayor of a small town in Spain gave the members of the police force a personal Twitter handle so the people of the town can tweet at them. People in that town also have the ability to tweet during town meetings or at any moment during the day to do things such as ask questions or notify the town that something needs to be repaired. As a platform it enforces the short and precise way of communicating thoughts and facts. Your thoughts can reach millions in minutes, no other platform can enable that as seamlessly as twitter does, in a way of empowering individuals with the world.
Twitter users tweet with the respective hashtags to notify governments and aid agencies about needs of affected communities and urgent requests. Twitter hashtags, a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to establish messages on a specific topic, allow users to identify topics they have an interest in. For example, the Philippines have used the #YolandaPH for the 2013 Typhoon. A set of standardized hashtags can help mitigate the big data challenge of an overflow of information during a disaster. In my own experience, my family and community have greatly benefited from the hashtag feature on Twitter. A few years ago, my country, Yemen, faced a rebellion, which erupted into a civil war. It has not come to an end, and we are able to stay updated by certain hashtags that talk about the war. Yemen is not an industrialized country so without Twitter, it would be very difficult to find information regarding the war. The Twitter hashtag #YemenCrisis has been a beneficial source that provides us with pictures, and even videos that shows us what is happening. With images, we are able to visualize the violence, fear, and starvation that is displayed throughout the war.
Twitter is a service for people to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. It’s an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages, called “tweets”.  It’s the place where people’s ideas are being read by many other people with the same interests, or who work in the same field. It’s the place where new ideas can get their first airing, where advice is willingly offered, where endorsements are freely given, where new partnerships are made, and where new projects are launched.  I think twitter has been an excellent tool in keeping us updated and providing us with information regarding events and crises. Twitter has changed our ideas and opinions about the world, providing us in-depth insight of our interests, and opening our mind to unfamiliar things.
