Emotional intelligence refers to the ability of an individual to recognize and control their own emotions. An individual with emotional intelligence is able to identify and evaluate emotions (University of California Berkeley, 2022). Emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership since emotions can negatively and positively impact people and behaviors (Grand Canyon University, 2018). It is also important for leaders to manage their emotions in stressful situations such as being short staffed, meeting deadlines, and resolving conflicts.
Some behaviors an effective leader with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate include self-control. It would be important for an effective leader to be mindful of their verbal and nonverbal communication when dealing with difficult work relationships. For example, if a leader was receiving negative feedback from a colleague, it would be important to be mindful of any closed body language. Some characteristics of leaders that are self-aware include being responsive, reflective, adaptable, and empathetic (Grand Canyon University, 2018).
