Individual Personal Counseling Approach Paper: Reality Therapy
You will identify one to three theories from the 13 we studied in this class that seems to you to be especially relevant; a theory (or theories) that “resonates” with you. (Theory selected for this paper is: Reality Therapy).
Develop these concepts by going beyond the text book, presentations, and Powerpoints to explore the ideas through peer-reviewed articles, authoritative websites, and scholarly books. Papers must include at least five (5) citations in addition to the textbook.
The IPCA should integrate your personal views of counseling with perspectives and research from the scholarly literature. It can be written in the first person. You will have to dig deep for this assignment. For example, you’ll need a rationale for why you combined certain approaches AND why certain other ones didn’t make the cut. (Psychotherapy is the counseling style to contrast with Reality Therapy).
This paper is designed to enhance your personal/professional/intellectual development though the synthesis and application of theoretical approaches to counseling.
The paper should integrate your personal views of counseling with perspectives and research from authoritative sources. It should be written in the first person and include an explanation of why these concepts work for you.
Organizing The Paper
Be sure to develop a thesis statement—the main idea that your paper will cover—and place it at the beginning of the paper, usually at the end of the first paragraph. Take a look at the OWL website from Purdue University for how to write a thesis statement. This site also has other excellent writing tips.
Develop your ideas in a logical order and make sure that (1) each sentence is complete (subject and predicate); (2) each paragraph deals with one specific idea; (3) the paragraphs flow from one to the next and make sense; and (4) each section hangs together (i.e., the ideas make sense in a linear, sequential way). Use “advance planners” to organize the paper. An advance planner tells your reader what is coming up next. Here is an example of an advance planner: “The key applications of Adlerian theory are in group counseling, family therapy and existential therapy.” You will then go on to discuss the three applications, one by one. This probably goes without saying, but a great way to assure an organized paper is to develop an outline. You can then use the outline to establish your sections. I find that papers with headings that delineate sections are very helpful.
Writing: Attend to grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and organization of ideas within your paragraphs. Make sure the progression of paragraphs and sections make sense. Writing is an iterative process; you develop your paper through multiple revisions.
What to Include
Values: This assignment is all about you and your personal/professional/intellectual development, so we’ll be looking for your belief systems and how your chosen theory(ies) have shaped them. You’ll also want to discuss the converse: How your values and belief system led to the selection of a certain theory or theories, but not others.
Counselor and Client Relationship: For each theory, a client-counselor interaction style is described or inferred. You may decide to adopt some aspects of one or another, but you’ll want to develop a rationale for how you will behave in relation to your client. You’ll want to include the implications of ethics and multicultural interactions.
Understanding of Theories: Demonstrate that you understand the theories you explore.
Format: Take each of the topics to be covered and use them to break your paper into sections (Personal Values/belief system, professional development, principles of your chosen theory(ies), self-understanding as to why this theory makes sense to you, how you feel this this theory will facilitate your interactions with clients, specific theoretical techniques, how to apply this theory(ies) to people with disabilities, ethical challenges, and multicultural implications). Develop 8 – 10 pages of text, double spaced in 12 pt. font with 1 inch margins. Please use Times New Roman or another academically appropriate/accessible font. (APA title page and Work Cited Page do not count toward the final page count.) Please adhere to the page limit as papers less than 8 pages or more than 10 pages will not be accepted.
The paper must include all of the following:
-Application of your theoretical orientation to your clients/consumers;
-Application of your theoretical orientation to diverse populations such as women and men, racial and ethnic minorities and people of different gender identities or sexual orientations;
-Identification of specific techniques or approaches; and
-Ethical considerations posed by your theoretical orientations.
