Calculate the amount of water it will take to cool the air in Mrs. Jones’ flat from 30 oC to 20 oC.
Mrs. Jones, your elderly neighbour, is thinking about having an evaporative air conditioner installed. She calls you and asks you to explain how they work.
Explain how an evaporative air conditioner works.
She tells you that her flat is 100 square meters and that the ceilings are 3 meters high. She is concerned that the air conditioner will use too much water and so be too expensive. Calculate the amount of water it will take to cool the air in Mrs. Jones’ flat from 30 oC to 20 oC. You can assume for the sake of the argument that the air in the flat is not being heated at the same time that it is being cooled. This means that the amount of water you determine is obviously a lower limit.
