Any topic (writer’s choice)

This is our last essay.  Remember, I will not read this draft.  You earn the points by submitting and peer reviewing. This is the opportunity to show me what you have learned about writing a college level essay.  We learned about assimilation and bias in the informational texts: Understanding the ProblemPreview the document By Janna Tiffany Diaz, and Assimilation in AmericaPreview the document by Yoko Shaw Taylor.  We experienced these concepts in both The Sisters are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America by Tamara Winfrey Harris and Fresh Off the Boat by Eddie Huang.  We learned the way an individual of color assimilates to American culture and the way an individual of color experiences bias from American culture.

1.To help you write your essay:
Create a Thesis Statement by Identifying a specific bias issue which both texts share

2. Define Bias and Assimilation in your own words; then, you can use a quotation from Diaz and Taylor to support your definition.

3. To create content for the body of your paper answer these questions and locate direct quotations to help you support your responses to these questions:
How is this bias affecting Huang and the women in Harriss text?
How are Huang and the women in Harriss text benefitting from this bias?
How are Huang and the women in Harriss text hurt or limited by this bias?
How will erasing this bias help Huang and the women in Harriss text?
Who might feel threatened by an attempt to erase this bias?

4. After answering these questions, see if you have three or four clear points you wish to make about Bias and Assimilation. These points will be the paragraphs that support your thesis statement.  Once you have decided on your points, write clear a sentence for each point; these sentences will be the topic sentence for your paragraphs.
